For the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, Morrigan sent the self-taught photographer, Miranda Barnes, then a student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, to Memphis on her first assignment for The New York Times.
Under Morrigan’s direction, Miranda used a Hasselblad film camera to capture modern scenes from the city that harkened back to Dr. King’s legacy there.
The Triumphs and Trials of Memphis ran on the front page of The New York Times on the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination with a double spread inside and an online presentation.
